Bessent Calls Target’s $1 Billion Tariff Refund Corporate Welfare
Full context
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent criticized a reported $1 billion tariff refund to Target while answering questions from White House reporters.
A reporter asked what the refund indicated about the amount of Chinese-made and other foreign-made merchandise sold by American retailers. Bessent attributed the refund to litigation brought by Democratic attorneys general and called the result corporate welfare.
Bessent argued that the money had already been held by the U.S. Treasury and said the administration expected to restore tariff revenue through Section 301 duties. He also said the government did not know what discounts Target may have received from Chinese suppliers and characterized the outcome as a corporate bonanza.
